CO₂ Laser Recovery: What to Expect From Redness, Healing & Aftercarw
CO₂ laser treatments can create meaningful changes in the skin, but the results develop through a healing and regeneration process. Understanding what to expect afterwards can make the recovery period much more comfortable and reassuring.
One of the most common questions we receive at EPICELL is:
“How long will my skin stay red after CO₂ laser?”
The answer depends on the depth and intensity of your treatment, your skin type and your individual healing response.
Why Does Skin Look Red After CO₂ Laser?
CO₂ laser creates controlled treatment zones within the skin to stimulate renewal and collagen remodelling. As the treated skin heals and new skin develops, increased blood flow to the area can result in pinkness or redness.
This is an expected part of the healing process.
Immediately following treatment, the skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive. Over the following days, you may experience dryness, swelling, darkening of treated areas, small scabs or peeling as the skin regenerates.
Once the initial healing has occurred, the skin may continue to appear pink or red while the newly regenerated skin matures.
How Long Does Redness Last?
The initial redness generally settles considerably during the first several days. However, residual pinkness can remain for several weeks and, in some patients, may persist for several months.
Following more intensive CO₂ treatments, some areas may remain noticeably pink or red for up to four months.
This does not necessarily mean that something is wrong. The colour should gradually become less noticeable as the skin continues to mature.
Your EPICELL clinician will discuss the expected recovery period based on your individual treatment settings and skin.
The First Few Days
During the first 4–7 days, the priority is to keep the skin clean, comfortable and protected while the surface heals.
Your skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive. Gentle cleansing and the recovery products recommended by your clinician should be used as directed.
If cooling is required, a cold compress wrapped in sterile gauze moistened with sterile saline can be used. Never place ice directly onto treated skin.
Your recommended emollient or recovery ointment may need to be reapplied several times throughout the day, particularly after cleansing or showering.
Showering After CO₂ Laser
We generally recommend waiting approximately 24 hours before showering, unless your clinician provides different instructions.
When you do shower:
Keep the shower short and lukewarm.
Avoid hot water running directly over the treated area.
Avoid strong water pressure on the skin.
Minimise steam and avoid very hot showers.
Keep shampoo and conditioner away from the treated area where possible.
Do not scrub or exfoliate the skin.
Gently pat the skin dry rather than rubbing.
Avoid saunas, steam rooms, spas and hot tubs until the skin has completely healed.
What Skincare Should I Avoid?
While the skin is healing, less is more.
Until your skin is completely healed and all scabbing and peeling have resolved, avoid active or potentially irritating products such as:
Tretinoin and other retinoids
Glycolic acid
Salicylic acid
Lactic acid
Mandelic acid
Scrubs and exfoliating products
Strong pigment-correcting products unless specifically recommended
Even if your skin appears better on the surface, the underlying skin barrier may still be recovering.
Your EPICELL clinician will advise you when it is appropriate to gradually reintroduce your active skincare.
What About Pigmentation Products?
For patients using pigmentation-focused skincare, products such as Mela Cream and DUAL+ should only be recommenced once the skin has completely healed and your clinician has advised that it is appropriate.
When reintroducing active products, do not use Retinols, Mela Cream and DUAL+ on the same night or combine them with retinoids unless specifically instructed by your clinician.
Introducing active products gradually allows your skin to readjust while minimising unnecessary irritation.
Sun Protection Is Essential
Sun protection is particularly important following CO₂ laser.
Freshly regenerated skin is more vulnerable to environmental exposure, and UV exposure can contribute to prolonged redness and unwanted pigmentation.
Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks, or longer following more intensive treatments as advised by your clinician.
Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every day and reapply when exposed to sunlight. Hats, shade and physical sun protection are also highly recommended.
For pigmentation-prone skin, diligent sun protection should continue for several months following treatment.
When Should I Contact EPICELL?
Some redness, warmth, sensitivity, swelling, dryness and peeling can be expected.
However, please contact EPICELL if you experience increasing or excessive redness, significant swelling, blistering, increasing pain, signs of infection or an unexpected reaction.
Do not commence antibiotic creams or other medicated products unless specifically recommended by your clinician.
Your Recovery Is Individual
CO₂ laser is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. The recovery period depends on your treatment intensity, skin type, treatment area and individual healing response.
At EPICELL, we take the time to explain what you can expect before your treatment and provide personalised aftercare based on your skin and treatment settings.
The goal is not simply to treat the skin — it is to support it carefully throughout the entire healing and regeneration process.
